A huge part of the Woodstock festival was the peace movement that came along with it. Many labeled themselves as hippies- someone who rejects the established culture; advocates extreme liberalism in politics and lifestyle. Most hippies embraced the Bohemian style, wearing clogs, bell bottoms and intricate headbands. Some used their clothes not only as a fashion statement but also as a political statement.
Since the Vietnam War was being fought at the same time the Woodstock festival took place, wrapping yourself in an American flag or a military jacket was normal as a way of saying you appreciate everything our troops are doing. Other popular items of clothing included crop tops and knit dresses. Obviously, the hippies' style can still be seen in today's society. Ironically, during the Woodstock festival, despite the enormous fashion trends and style movement that occurred, many people walked around nude. The phrase 'carefree living' was one the hippies didn't take lightly.
